My New Island Home

December 21, 2007

Three weeks ago, Faeryll and I moved to the house we are renting.  This area is intensly beautiful, with scenery unlike any I’ve seen save possibly New Zealand.  We have done much exploring up and down the shorelines:

deer 1

doe 1 DSCF1561
Several deer that frequent our yard every few days.  They seem to enjoy the grass, coming to graze in the morning or around dusk, sometimes staying for a couple hours.  This photo was taken through an upstairs window.

Nermi
This is Nermi:  The cat who has inhabited this house longer than any human.

fake moon rising
An interesting shot from the front yard, through the fisheye.  It’s not the moon, but kind of looks like it, and makes a kickass picture at the same time.

meditations of a wood stove 2
This is the stove.  The stove keeps us warm and cooks much of our food.  The stove involved a bit of a learning curve, but we now all work very well together.

And the coast!  Beautiful to say the least.  There are bizarre geological formations in this area, with amazingly intricate channels and caves cut out of the rock everywhere.
creature of the rock
Including this odd looking creature!

And a couple more said features.

cosmic
The rain is of course prevalent, and we depend on it for much of our water related needs.  As does this plant.

That’s it for now…

The “odd looking creature” is a type of weathering called tafoni and occurs most commonly in sandstones that are exposed to salt during the weathering process.
